This is far from a natural sound signature, but where there is bass boosting there is also high-frequency definition and clarity. This is made up for by the bright presence of the higher-register brass, strings, and vocals. Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene from John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, get some added low-frequency richness that can occasionally push the lower-register instrumentation a bit too far forward in the mix. Again, there’s sculpting through the frequency range, but there’s solid balance between the lows and highs. The drum loop also gets some added low-frequency heft, and the vocals are delivered with solid clarity in the highs, and perhaps a small amount of added sibilance. On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop receives ideal high-mid presence, allowing its attack to retain its punchiness, while the sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat are perhaps a bit too low for the woofer to reach regardless, we get a decent sense of the sub-bass even if it isn’t fully delivered. With this in mind, the Charge 5 is a bass-forward, bright speaker that delivers plenty of power without sacrificing balance.

This is in no way an accurate sound signature, but $100 to $200 portable waterproof speakers are seldom about accuracy, and more about bringing a sense of bass depth without distorting. The high-mids and highs are also sculpted and dialed up, however, lending the vocals, acoustic strum, and higher-register percussive hits some added crispness. The drums on this track get some added bass presence, as do Callahan's baritone vocals-both get a fuller, richer sound than they would through a more flat response speaker. The addition of a tweeter adds a touch of extra high-frequency clarity to the mix, and at top volumes things don’t distort, nor does the DSP (digital signal processing) seem to thin the bass out in an overwhelming manner.īill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Charge 5’s general sound signature.

On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the Charge 5 delivers palpable low-frequency depth-the drivers may not be able to reach all the way down to the deepest lows, but the passive radiators do a laudable job of recreating the thump. JBL estimates the Charge 5’s battery life to be roughly 20 hours, but your results will vary with your volume levels.
And being impervious to dust, it's safe to take to the beach, camping, or pretty much anywhere else you might want to break out some tunes. Bluetooth signal doesn’t work underwater, but the point is that the speaker can withstand pouring rain, a dunk in the pool, and getting rinsed off under a faucet without issue.
